At the same time, Chapman, alongside different detainees, endeavors to wrestle with the jail's various, intrinsic battles. The season 8 plot is expected to focus on Piper Chapman who was accused to have been involved in a drug case for his girlfriend, 10 years after the present time in the series and gets sentenced for fifteen months. Caputo sees himself as a savior of these women, but he chooses ultimately to perpetuate the broken system that surrounds them. The prison officials are, in actuality, also just as trapped — by red tape, by bureaucracy, by personal desire, by anger issues — as the inmates. These three or four arcs are probably the most compelling, amidst the rest of the stories that were incomplete going into the season and remain immature coming out of it.

Piper, the main character, inhabits an arc that begins ridiculous , gets interesting (she gets furlough to attend her grandma's funeral) and finishes flat . Officer Bennett, who knocked up inmate Daya Diaz and then framed the sacked Officer "Pornstache" Mendez for it, all share a plotline that goes nowhere. Mendez is even brought back for almost no reason, only to be fired again and arrested at the end of the episode.

Sophia Burset, played by the amazing Laverne Cox, also becomes disappointingly boring, and mostly only appears to deliver smarmy one-liners. Soso, the only other new recurring character besides Vee, is just plain annoying, and seemingly added in only so there would be a prominent Asian character on the show. And more readily willing to learn the stories of every inmate, no matter how obscure they may have once seemed. I do worry a bit about the show becoming too precious with who it considers to be its core cast, but then again, this isn't supermax. And I applaud many of its choices, both in character and format. The first two episodes alone are surprising in their focus.

And, of course, it remains infinitely quotable, with enough witticisms, both insightful and shallow, to meet any guard's shot quota. However, even if the company does save the day, I'd be surprised if the writers brought Fig back just for a single episode. As she teases at the end of "Empathy is a Boner Killer," I'd like to bet there's a lot of questionable tactics she could teach Caputo to ensure Litchfield stays firmly afloat.

Meanwhile, Piper continues to play cute and innocent with Alex, but when the guilt sets in, Piper comes clean and admits that she sold her out. As one might expect, Alex is absolutely furious and their relationship seems irreparable, but then in an unexpected and unearned twist, Alex reconnects with Piper via hate sex. The drama class role play, however, is a bit more my speed. It balances the palpable hostility with humor and heart, making the scene wildly entertaining, but also ensuring that the moment really means something, too.

That said, I love being able to record a show or access it on demand if I can't watch it when it first airs. But as Netflix continues to ramp up their original series, the idea of streaming episode after episode of a half-dozen shows begins to feel less like entertainment, and more like homework. So inmates like Lorna, Gloria, Miss Rosa, and Sister Jane got to have their stories told, but the the stories that got told first were those of Taystee, Crazy Eyes, Poussey, and Cindy. And so the second biggest element to Season 2 involved the transformation of the black inmates into a somewhat diabolical crew. And with this story came the season's biggest dose of heartache and triumph, as one member of this group had to watch all her friends morph into unrecognizable thugs.

As with the first season, all 13 episodes of the prison drama will be available on the streaming service at once. Season 2 can be seen as being structured around the war between Red and Vee, the two women acting as poles between which much of the action occurs. She went from being a meth addict to a religious woman when she entered prison. Throughout the show's five seasons, Nicky struggled with drug use but is finally clean. A lot of pressure is put on her on the final season as she tries to maintain friendships with Red and Lorna. On the show's final season, they struggle to maintain their relationship with Piper outside of prison.

And with its cancellation seemingly a mutual agreement between its creator and its streaming home, OITNB has been giving the golden opportunity to finish on its own terms. The writers of the series also took minor character's stories to new heights. Rosa, who for most of the first season was just an old fat background character, is revealed to have lived an insane life of crime and tragedy.

Sister Ingalls was actually a hippie nun before being arrested for trespassing on a nuclear plant. Lorna Morello's husband-in-waiting actually has a restraining order against her, and their romance is an artifice of her own mental disorders. Sorry for the run-on there, but that one might be the best of all of them.

The first season of Netflix series "Orange is the New Black" was something like a proof of concept that worked almost too well. A cast of insanely diverse characters of multitudes never seen before on television, to my knowledge, paired with a quick-witted script that often toed the line between knee-slapper and tear-jerker several times within the same episode. It was a lowish-budget gamble that, along with "House of Cards," put Netflix on top of the television game, and it wasn't even broadcast on a network. "OITNB" was the televised revolution that the TV Renaissance seemingly had been leading up to.
